Identification of APN Research
Research studies and measurement instruments that have been used in APN research were located through an extensive literature review.
CINAHL (1982-2008), EMBASE (1980-2008), and MEDLINE (1950-2008) were searched using the following keywords: Advanced Nursing Practice, Advanced Practice Nursing, Advanced Practice Nurses, Nurse Practitioner(s), Clinical Nurse Specialist(s), Nurse Clinicians, Nurse Anesthetists, Canada, United States, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand.
The summaries were completed by a single reviewer. If you are aware of any errors or omissions, please let us know by sending an email to
All instruments found have been included in the toolkit, without the use of any methodological filter.
Information displayed in each toolkit summary represents all of the information found regarding that tool. Therefore, if headings are missing in a tool summary, that denotes no information is available.
Tools for which limited information is available should be approached with caution. It is very likely that these tools require further development and reliability and validity testing.
We gratefully acknowledge BC Ministry of Health Services for their generous funding support of this project.
